Scot JCB is a powerhouse when it comes to supplying construction, agricultural and industrial machinery – from diggers and tractors to generators and compressors – to businesses across the UK, as well as the NHS. As stockists of a wide range of new and used machines from its 17 depots across Scotland and the north of England, it has some 165 engineers out in the field, as part of a 350-strong employee base.

The company was struggling to manage its mobile communications, with no way to gain oversight over its usage. When it made the move to providing workers with smartphones instead of relying on laptops connected to mobile hotspots last year, on the advice of plan.com partner Silvercloud, it simultaneously switched to have plan.com look after its SIMs on the O2 network.
Scott Spowage, Scot JCB’s Group IT Manager, explains that the decision to choose plan.com was based on three key requirements: containing costs, improving visibility over bills, and gaining control over the company’s mobile communications – all of which have been met.

Thanks to plan.com and its my.plan platform, Scot JCB was able to achieve more transparency and better oversight. This means that bills are now more streamlined, as the company can see them all in one place, plus the risk of unexpected overspend is eliminated. “Before, we had no way of knowing when people were approaching their data limits and we only found out after the horse had bolted, or in other words, when the bill came in,” Spowage says. “Now I’ve got access to my.plan and it is excellent,” says Spowage.
The platform also allows for greater proactivity and flexibility in how mobile comms are managed. For example, SIM cards can be given to new users and bolt-on minutes and data bundles added without having to go through the mobile supplier to do so – this can all be done via the platform. Different profiles can be set up for different user types (e.g. engineers, sales staff or company directors), so employees are given the appropriate access to the data apps and calls they need, with restrictions on various types of usage in place as necessary – another cost-limiting feature.
